Originally a professional astronomer, Dr Mark A. Garlick is a freelance illustrator and author, specialising in images of science fiction, earth sciences, technology, astronomy and space. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1993 after four years of study at University College London, then spent three further years in full-time research at Sussex University, near Brighton in the UK. In 1996 he left academia to establish a freelance career. Since then he has written and illustrated five of his own books, and his images have appeared in their hundreds in other books, publications and in advertising. He recently spent three years living in Thailand, but is now back in the UK. He is married and has one daughter.

Method
Although he began art the traditional way, these days Dr Garlick is primarily a digital artist. He uses mainly Photoshop, either importing elements from photos or hand-drawing from scratch with a graphics pad. He also uses some 3D programs, such as Bryce and Terragen, but is largely a 2D artist.
